Edward Louis  Nagy

Edward Louis Nagy, 76, of Fort Smith, AR, went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 22, 2017 after a short but hard fought battle with cancer. He entered this world on March 15, 1941 in Rio Grande City, Texas to his proud parents, Louis and Edith Sue Cook Nagy. At age 9 the family moved to Boerne, Texas where his father was the manager of a 14, 000 acre ranch. Ed graduated from Boerne High School with 35 other friends in the Class of 1959. He attended his freshman year of college at Texas A&M University and that summer worked for the Texas Highway Department on a road building Crew. He later transferred to Tarleton State College as biology major and during his time joined the ROTC.

Ed was a retired Major who served 21 years on active duty with the United States Army as a Field Artillery Officer. During his military career he served in various command and staff positions at both Battalion and Division levels. Major Nagy served tours in the United States, South Korea, The Republic of Vietnam and German. During the Vietnam War, he served with the 3rd Battalion, 13th Field Artillery and 25th Infantry Division from 1968-1969. He completed his military career in 1985 in Fort Smith, AR as Battalion Advisor with the 2nd Battalion, 142nd Field Artillery for the Arkansas Army National Guard. Major Nagy’s military awards include three Bronze Star Medals, one with V Device for Valor, the Purple Heart Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, an Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal and various other service medals and ribbons including the German Armed Forces Marksmanship badge in Bronze.

After retirement, Major Nagy served as Director of Physical Plant for Westark Community College, Construction Coordinator for the City of Fort Smith Planning Department, and as an independent contractor for Western Arkansas Planning and Development District.

Major Nagy was very actively involved in local veteran’s activities having served as Commander of Chapter 587 with the Military Order of the Purple Heart for seven years, then two years as Commander of MOPH Department of Arkansas and was currently serving as Adjutant and Finance Officer for Chapter 587. He is a Life Member of the Vietnam Veterans of American Chapter 467 and past member of VFW and Military Officer’s Association of America. He served as Chairman of the Avenue of Flags Committee at the Fort Smith National Cemetery for seven years and was the current Officer for the River Valley Veterans Coalition. Major Nagy served as Board Chairman and CED for Camp Hope for Heroes, a non-profit organization to help homeless veterans and was the current President of the Riverblenders Barbershop Chorus.

He was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Edith Nagy. He is survived by his wife Darla, of the home, a son, Steven Nagy and his wife Sandra of Belton, TX, a daughter, Stacey Lockhart and husband Tim of Alma, AR, a step-daughter Brittany O’Kelley of Dyer, AR, a granddaughter Kendall Nagy of Belton, TX, a grandson Ryan Lockhart of Alma, AR, a sister Mary Ann Vallad and husband Jerry of Black River, MI and a nephew Bradford Watson and wife Jennifer of Holly, MI.

Visitation with Ed’s family will be held Thursday, May 25th, from 6-8 PM at Ocker Funeral Home 700 Jefferson Street Van Buren.

Funeral services will be 12:30 PM, Friday, May 26, 2017 at Ocker Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Fort Smith National Cemetery with military honors under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home in Van Buren.

Pallbearers will be Steve Nagy, Tim Lockhart, Bradford Watson, Carder Ferguson, Jimmy Christie, and Johnny Gothard.

In lieu of flowers, Ed requested donations to be made to Military Order of Purple Heart Chapter 587, 1030 South 66th Street, Fort Smith, AR 72903 and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 467, PO Box 10431, Fort Smith, AR 72917.
