Obituary for Fondon Irene Oxford (Rhodes)

Fondon Irene Oxford (Rhodes)
Irene was born in Mountainburg, Arkansas to Elisha James and Lora Mae Rhodes on April 30, 1926. She is survived by her beloved husband Oline of 74 years. She also leaves her children Richard Brian Oxford (Gail), Roger Ollie Oxford, Susan Lorabeth Standke (Bill), grandchildren, Aaron Gibran Oxford, David Brian Oxford, Whitney Garrett Oxford (Julie) and Georgia Lorabeth Mansour (Ashton) along with a host of great grandchildren.

Irene focused her life on family, marriage, spirituality, and her career. She enjoyed the simple life as was reflected in her love of poetry, gardening, her mastery in cooking and traveling in their motor coach. Friends and loved ones will remember her for her common-sense approach, her wit and sense of humor. Irene’s character is best reflected in a statement she penned in her favorite poetry book, as follows:

I am not terribly impressed with the beautiful things in life
I thank you for that, God
Give me something big, ugly, mean and tough-then give me the knowledge and heart to do something about it—
Irene Oxford 09-30-70

Irene and Oline enjoyed 74 years of marriage. Throughout their years together, Irene supported him every step of the way during his career with Noble Drilling Corporation. After numerous moves, they settled in Andrews, Texas and raised their family.
Upon raising her family, Irene went back to school in 1965 and received her Registered Nurse degree. She added value and greeted her 25-year nursing career with upmost respect. She maintained a professional presence with both patient care and co-worker’s, thus earning the title as “Big O” as head nurse in ICU.

Irene and Oline represent a piece of Americana. They survived the harsh realities of the Great Depression; their struggles were numerous. Growing up in that era shaped their outlook on life and they held fast to the virtues of hard work and perseverance. Their faith in God carried them through good times, bad times, and tragic times. Credence is given to the belief that good can come from bad and meaning can come from tragedy.
Irene was preceded in death by her parent’s and grandson William Frederick Standke V.
The family would like to express a special thank you to Kerri Rizzo. Her dedication, positive attitude, attentive care and support is such a blessing. She was wonderful with our mother during her final days, for her ‘labor of love’ we are grateful.
